What’s happening at Bamford Media in 2021?
Happy New Year!
Rather than dwell too much on the ‘challenge’ that was 2020, I wanted to share some plans for the year ahead.
But first, and by way of brief explanation, a summary of our past 12 months.
Towards the end of 2019, I made the decision to scale things up at Bamford Media.
Business was booming. We were struggling to cope with the demand for our services, and there was plenty of opportunity for growth.
So, I invested some cash into the business, funding the recruitment of more staff and the expansion of our office space.
When the pandemic hit home in March, we immediately lost several of our largest clients. Future demand for marketing services was incredibly unsure and many of the team (myself included!) faced the fresh challenge of homeschooling for an unknown length of time.
Without an end date in view, we scaled right back as quickly as possible, doing our best to keep up with our remaining clients, with a largely furloughed team and remote working.
As the year dragged on, I had something of an epiphany and decided to refocus the business.
This decision to refocus came about for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, so we could dedicate our team to the things which we do best. Secondly, in recognition that my own time is finite and is best allocated to a limited number of highest-impact activities.
Last month, we ended our office lease and made the full transition to remote working.
I’m now operating full-time from my ‘shedquarters’ (a name borrowed from David Scarlett!) at the end of the garden. James has a brand new desk in the still largely empty Informed Choice offices at Sundial House. Kathryn and Emma are working from their respective homes.
In 2021 (and beyond), Bamford Media is going to do three things.
Firstly, we’re going to work with our existing group of wonderful clients to produce and publish their content. We are not going to engage with new clients this year but will run a waiting list for anyone who is particularly keen to work with us.
For Financial Planners who want to access our content production, we are offering our FinCart GO membership package, offering unlimited access to off-the-shelf blog content, ready to republish on their websites. This is the second string to our bow.
And last but not least, we are publishing under our new brand, Finvincible, which serves as my personal finance, investing and happiness platform.
Finvincible (for now) consists of a blog and rapidly growing YouTube channel, with a selection of online courses and books in development.
Part of my epiphany last year was the welcome realisation that I take on (far) too much.
For 2021 and beyond, my ambition is to do much less, but do it to a much higher standard.
Working with Kathryn, James and Emma, the Bamford Media business has the potential to rise to new heights this year, by focusing on delivering the best possible service to a small number of clients, while offering elements of what we do at scale via FinCart and Finvincible.
I’m going to make myself purposefully unavailable this year, doing what author Cal Newport refers to as ‘Deep Work‘, and empowering my team to make things happen.
While I’ll be focusing on fewer areas this year, my goals include the production of hundreds of videos, podcasts and articles, along with a handful of online courses and a book or two. To make all of this happen, I need to stay off the phone, off social media and out of my email inbox.
For 2021, I’ve chosen three words to guide my mission – Create, Focus, Move.
Along with content creation and a focus on a small number of business objectives, I’ve chosen Move to remind me to prioritise my health and fitness, with an ambitious weight loss programme already underway, and then some sporting challenges to complete later in the year.
We still don’t know for how long this pandemic will be with us, disrupting the economy and our social lives. My best estimate is a form of lockdown through until the summer.
On that basis, there’s little sense in remaining in hibernation until things get back to ‘normal’. The New Year starts now.
